How to Connect Claude or ChatGPT to Your CRM with MCP (and What to Ask It)

If you already spend an hour a day in Claude or ChatGPT, the obvious next step is letting it see your pipeline: which deals are stale, who you promised to call back, what the month looks like. That is what a CRM MCP server does.

This guide explains MCP without developer vocabulary, shows which Gmail CRMs offer it as of October 2026, walks through connecting Claude and ChatGPT, and gives twelve prompts a small team will actually use. We use Teamopipe, our own CRM, for the setup example; the pattern is the same for any CRM with an MCP server.

What MCP is, in two paragraphs

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard that gives an AI assistant a structured way to talk to other software. Think of it as a USB port for AI tools: the assistant (Claude, ChatGPT and others) plugs into an MCP server that the software vendor runs, and the server exposes a short menu of things the assistant may do, such as "search deals" or "create a task on this contact." The assistant picks the action that fits your request, calls it, and shows you the result in plain language.

For a non-developer, the practical meaning is simple: instead of exporting a CSV and pasting it into a chat, you connect once and then just ask questions.

What connecting your CRM lets you do

Once connected, the assistant can read the records you have access to and, depending on the CRM, make small changes. Everyday jobs that get faster:

  • Answer pipeline questions. "Which deals in Proposal sent have had no activity for 14 days?" takes seconds instead of three filter clicks.
  • Summarise the pipeline. A Monday overview of value by stage, what moved and what is at risk, in sentences.
  • Draft follow-ups from deal context. The assistant knows the deal, the last note and the contact, so the draft is specific rather than a template.
  • Prepare for a call. A brief pulling a deal's contacts, notes and open tasks.
  • Log the outcome. "Add a note to the Acme deal and create a task to call them on Friday."

How to connect Teamopipe to Claude

  1. Copy the server address. In Teamopipe, go to Settings → Integrations and scroll to AI assistants. Copy the address under "Your Teamopipe MCP server". No API key is needed.
  2. Add a custom connector in Claude. Open Customize → Connectors and choose Add custom connector. On Claude Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds it first under Organization settings → Connectors.
  3. Paste the address and connect. Click Connect and sign in to Teamopipe.
  4. Choose your workspace and approve access. Then turn the connector on in a chat.
  5. Test with a read-only question, such as "Which deals need follow-up this week?" If the answer contains deals from your workspace, it works.

How to connect Teamopipe to ChatGPT

  1. Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT's settings. On workspace plans, an admin may need to allow it.
  2. Add a custom MCP server and give it a name and description.
  3. Paste the Teamopipe MCP server address, including the /mcp ending, and sign in when asked.
  4. Sign in to Teamopipe and choose your workspace.

The same address also works in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and Gemini CLI; setup instructions for each are in Settings → Integrations. Our MCP help article has troubleshooting steps, and the Claude and ChatGPT integration pages show what each can do.

What the assistant can do in Teamopipe

Through MCP, Claude or ChatGPT can search contacts and organisations, review deals and activity, add notes and create tasks. It acts with your own access to the workspace you chose, and it proposes changes for you to confirm before they reach your data. Stage changes, deletions and sending email stay in Teamopipe itself.

That scope is deliberate. Reads and small, reversible writes are where an assistant saves time. Anything destructive or customer-facing should stay with a human.

12 prompts a small team will actually use

These work against any CRM connected through MCP. Swap in your own stage names.

Weekly review

  1. "Summarise my pipeline by stage: count, total value and the three largest deals in each. Then list every open deal with no activity in the last 14 days."
  2. "What changed in my pipeline since last Monday? New deals, won and lost. Under 150 words."
  3. "Which open deals have an expected close date in the past? For each, suggest whether to push the date, mark it lost or follow up today, and say why."

Follow-up drafting

  1. "Draft a follow-up email to the main contact on the Acme deal. Use the last two notes for context, keep it under 120 words and end with one specific question. Do not send anything."
  2. "For each deal in Proposal sent with no activity for over a week, draft a short, different nudge that references what we proposed. Show me all of them."
  3. "List contacts tagged 'past client' I have not been in touch with for six months and draft a two-line check-in for each."

Call prep and logging

  1. "I have a call with Dana Ortiz in 30 minutes. Brief me: her deals, the last notes, open tasks and anything I promised."
  2. "Add a note to the Ortiz deal: agreed to send a revised scope by Thursday. Then create a task for me due Wednesday to send it."
  3. "Create follow-up tasks for every deal I moved to Proposal sent this week, due in two days."

Data hygiene and forecasting

  1. "List deals with no owner, no value or no expected close date, so I can fix them."
  2. "Show me likely duplicate organisations (same domain, similar name). Do not change anything; just list them."
  3. "From deals won in the last six months, what is my average deal size and win rate? Based on the open pipeline, roughly what could close this month? Show your assumptions."

Notice the phrasing on anything that writes: "do not send," "show me," "do not change anything." That is your seatbelt.

Limitations and security

Check before you act. The assistant can misread a field or state a detail confidently that is not in the CRM. Open the record before acting on what it told you, and never send an email you have not read.

Data leaves your CRM. Deal notes and contact names pass through the AI provider's servers. Check your privacy obligations and the provider's data-retention settings, especially with client data.

Connector administration. On team plans of Claude and ChatGPT, an admin may need to allow custom connectors before anyone can add one.

Large requests are slow and expensive. Ask for filtered subsets ("deals in Negotiation," "contacts updated this week") rather than "everything."

Not every feature is exposed. CRM MCP servers usually cover records, notes and tasks first. Campaigns, automations and reports typically stay in the normal interface.

Revoking access is one click. Remove the connector in your assistant's settings, or manage it in Teamopipe under Settings → Integrations.

Is it worth setting up?

If you already use Claude or ChatGPT daily, yes. Connecting takes five minutes, and the Monday pipeline review and pre-call brief alone save real time. Teamopipe includes MCP on every plan, from $19 per user per month on annual billing, and the 14-day trial includes Growth features with no card needed. If you need deep marketing automation or a very large integration catalogue, compare HubSpot and NetHunt first.

FAQ

What is a CRM MCP server?

A CRM MCP server is a service run by your CRM vendor that exposes your pipeline, contacts and tasks to AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard. Once connected, Claude or ChatGPT can answer questions about your CRM data and make small changes from a chat.

Can I connect Claude to my CRM without coding?

Yes, if your CRM offers an MCP server. Copy the server address from your CRM's settings, add it as a custom connector in Claude under Customize → Connectors, and sign in to authorise. The vendor runs the server; no code is needed.

Does ChatGPT support CRM connections through MCP?

Yes. In ChatGPT you turn on Developer mode in settings and add a custom MCP server using the address your CRM provides. On workspace plans, an admin may need to allow it.

Which Gmail CRMs have an MCP server?

As of October 2026, Teamopipe (every plan), NetHunt (from Basic), HubSpot and folk offer official MCP servers. We could not find an official server for Streak or Copper, though third-party connectors exist.

Is it safe to connect an AI assistant to my CRM?

It is as safe as the access you give it. Start with read-only questions, confirm every proposed change, never let it send customer emails unread, and check your AI provider's data-retention settings. In Teamopipe the assistant acts with your own permissions and asks you to approve changes.

How much does Teamopipe's MCP server cost?

It is included on every plan. Plans are $19, $29 and $49 per user per month on annual billing as of October 2026, with a 14-day trial that needs no card.
